When it comes to pure gameplay, Battlegrounds does share a lot of characteristics with its main series. You can throw opponents dozens of feet in the air or feed them to a crocodile, and even real life signature moves from superstars like The Undertaker or Triple H have a unique punch that other games in the series have lacked and make it addicting to watch, even if you see the same moves over and over again. Almost every attack, throw, intro, or special ability animation is exaggerated to reinforce visual satisfaction and fun over anything else. Character models are hilariously disproportionate, with oversized heads and massive hands dominating their surface area. Like in Saber’s other recent games, it actively shuns any realism it may have implied. It’s immediately apparent that Battlegrounds isn’t your typical WWE game, not only in its lack of any major bugs, but also in its cartoonish art style and over-the-top animations. It’s effectively Saber Interactive’s NBA Playgrounds in a WWE skin, but it’s the type of fluid, fun gameplay that makes stepping into the ring as enjoyable as any WWE 2K game in recent memory. In its stead is WWE 2K Battlegrounds, an arcadey, over-the-top spin-off of the WWE 2K series that does the best job at translating what makes the WWE so engaging to a game in a few years. Instead, the series has taken annual downturns that culminated in the buggy, nigh-unplayable mess that was WWE 2K20, forcing the rare occurrence of an annual franchise skipping a year. For such a violent, grandiose, and emotionally engaging sport, it seems like the perfect match to translate to a game. Still, Battlegrounds does have a fair amount to offer WWE fans and serves as a great casual entry in the WWE game library.It’s been an unsteady few years for the WWE 2K franchise. Also, the available options for creating your own Superstar or Battleground feel a bit limited, especially for anyone used to the hyper-detailed features present in the main WWE 2K games.

But the grind to do so can get a little frustrating.

It's not difficult to earn money in the game, with every match earning players a small purse and daily challenges offering bigger rewards for specific actions.

Many of the bigger Superstars and Legends are locked behind a paywall, waiting to be purchased with either currency earned in-game or with real-world cash. For starters, the reliance on microtransactions can get a bit frustrating. And it's entertaining as heck.Īs much fun as WWE 2K Battlegrounds is, it does have a few botches on its wresting package. One match even resulted in a barrel exploding, blowing the ring posts and ropes off, which completely changed the mechanics of the match. As outrageously fun as it is to see the characters defy physics with exaggerated moves and flashy special effects, it's even more fun to play with the props outside the ring, like a remote-controlled goat you can use to smack opponents around, or a hungry alligator that's watching the match ringside with the rest of the audience, waiting for you to toss your foe into its jaws. The characters have the look and feel of action figures, and Battlegrounds serves as a sort of interactive toy box fueled by a kid's imagination. In its place is fast-paced button-mashing arcade mayhem that's simple to pick up and play but hard to put down. Gone are the complexities and technique of the simulation-style WWE 2K games of the past. WWE 2K Battlegrounds takes all of that and cranks it up to an 11, tossing any semblance of realism out the window along the way. The characters and personalities of World Wrestling Entertainment have always been larger than life.
